Le preposizioni temporali
Le preposizioni temporali servono a collocare un evento o un’azione nel tempo. In inglese sono le seguenti:
IN: indica intervalli di tempo più o meno ampi (secoli, anni, stagioni, mesi, parti della giornata):
Vernal keratoconjunctivitis follows a seasonal pattern with onset in spring, exacerbation in summer and a tendency to remission in the autumn-winter period.
For most patients, blood pressure showed a marked diurnal variation, with a decrease during sleep and a surge in the morning.
La preposizione in è anche usata per indicare la cornice temporale in cui avverranno eventi futuri:
Surgery is scheduled to take place in the next two hours.
AT indica un momento preciso:
Surgery is scheduled to take place at 10.30.
ON è usata per indicare giorni precisi:
On day 31 of the study, all rats were placed into a separate cage and observed for 24 hours.
SINCE indica un intervallo di tempo che ha inizio in un momento preciso:
Researchers have sought therapeutic applications for monoclonal antibodies since their development in 1975.
FOR è usata per esprimere la durata di un’azione o di un evento:
Developing biocompatible, synthetic oxygen carriers is a challenging task that researchers have been pursuing for decades.
For e since sono due preposizioni che vengono spesso confuse; per evitare errori è utile chiedersi se si sta parlando di un intervallo di tempo o di un punto nel tempo: nel primo caso si usa for (for 72 hours, for six months); nel secondo, since (since the intervention, since the first visit).
DURING e THROUGHOUT indicano entrambe un arco di tempo in cui si svolge un’azione ma mentre during implica uno o più punti temporali discreti all’interno del lasso di tempo in questione, throughout li comprende tutti:
Interviews were conducted with 15 pregnant women during their stay in hospital
significa che le pazienti sono state intervistate in un determinato momento durante il ricovero;
Interviews were conducted with 15 pregnant women throughout their stay in hospital
significa che le interviste si sono succedute continuamente per tutto il periodo del ricovero.
WHILE implica lo svolgimento simultaneo di due azioni ed è del tutto equivalente all’italiano mentre:
Site-specific methods eliminate the high-drug loading antibodies while limiting the number of unconjugated antibodies present.
Si noti che while ha anche valore avversativo oltre che temporale e in questa accezione può essere sostituito da whereas:
Ezrin is concentrated in the apical microvilli of a wide variety of epithelial cells, while/whereas Moesin is found primarily in endothelial cells.
BY e WITHIN sono entrambe traducibili con entro; la differenza è che by implica un termine ultimo (by the end of the experiment, by the time of the final visit, by 31 July); within, un periodo di tempo (within 48 hours, within the allotted time frame). In caso di dubbi è utile ricordare che within – ma non by – può essere sostituita con la preposizione in: se la frase ha ancora senso compiuto (in 48 hours, in the allotted time frame), la preposizione corretta sarà within; in caso contrario, by.
