Il determinativo “any”
La particella any può fungere sia da pronome, sia da determinativo. Nel primo caso si comporta come tutti gli altri pronomi, ossia sostituisce un sostantivo (e.g.: we expected complications but there weren’t any, in cui any è usato al posto di complications). Nel secondo caso esprime un’indicazione di quantità oppure indica un’entità indefinita. È in questa veste che il corretto uso di any può presentare difficoltà per i parlanti italofoni.
Come determinativo, any ha due forme: una cosiddetta debole e una forte. La forma debole è usata per indicare una quantità indefinita nelle proposizioni negative, interrogative e condizionali:
Are there any ambulances ready?
There weren’t any significative improvements.
If the specimen contains any antibodies to Trypanosoma Cruzi, the complex binds to the antigens on the solid phase.
In questa forma, any si accompagna solo a sostantivi plurali o non numerabili. Laddove in italiano un’affermazione come non c’era nessun ferito è del tutto corretta, in inglese occorrerà scrivere there weren’t any casualties. Volendo usare un sostantivo singolare, questo dovrà essere preceduto da un articolo indeterminativo:
Is there an ambulance ready?
There wasn’t a significative improvement.
If the specimen contains an antibody to Trypanosoma Cruzi, the complex binds to the antigens on the solid phase.
Nella sua forma forte, any indica un’entità indefinita, non specificata:
Our technology allows high-sensitivity determination of the activity of any enzyme for which a fluorescent substrate can be synthesized.
In questo caso any sta per uno qualsiasi (qualunque enzima) e potrebbe anche essere sostituito da all, pur con una sfumatura differente: any indica ciascun componente di una totalità; all, la totalità intesa come insieme. Quando usato in questa accezione, any può essere seguito indifferentemente da un sostantivo singolare:
Any complication can be managed by following the procedure outlined in the protocol
plurale:
There are very few studies reporting the production of any antibodies by cold-blooded animals upon the injection of foreign proteins
o non numerabile:
Information about most recent CD4 count and viral load was obtained, as well as any information about antiretroviral therapy.
Semplificando all’estremo, any è sempre seguito da un sostantivo plurale o non numerabile quando usato nelle proposizioni negative, interrogative o condizionali; da un sostantivo singolare, plurale o non numerabile quando usato nelle proposizioni affermative.
Un ultimo aspetto riguarda l’uso di any in alternativa a no nelle proposizioni negative. Any non ha di per sé un valore negativo e deve essere preceduto dalla forma negativa del predicato; no è invece preceduto dal predicato nella sua forma positiva:
There were not any technical problems with the equipment.
There were no technical problems with the equipment.
Le due frasi hanno identico significato ma la seconda pone maggiore enfasi sull’informazione riportata.
